Welsh Labour's First Minister Rhodri Morgan has congratulated Geraint
Thomas on his Gold Medal as part of the record-breaking men’s pursuit race at
the Beijing Olympics.
Geraint Thomas and his team mates stormed to success in the men’s pursuit race
against Denmark, breaking their own record to land the Gold for
Britain.
Thomas joins fellow Olympic medal winners Tom James from Wrexham
and Tom Lucy from Monmouth who rowed to victory at the weekend, and Wick-born
Nicole Cook who took the first Gold for Great Britain.
This is the best Olympics for Wales for many years. Geraint Thomas’ medal and world record, as part of the team pursuit, really was a fantastic achievement.
"Geraint’s achievement is almost unbelievable considering the life-threatening injury he suffered. To come back from that injury shows incredible fortitude and determination.
"I am particularly pleased as we are both former pupils of Whitchurch High School. The school has a great record for turning out excellent sportsmen, also including Gareth Bale and Sam Warburton.
