Lesley Griffiths - Wrexham

Lesley was first elected to the National Assembly for Wales, representing the constituency of Wrexham, in May 2007. Prior to her election, she worked as the Constituency Assistant to the town’s Member of Parliament for six years having previously worked in the NHS as an Administrator at the Wrexham Maelor Hospital for 20 years. Lesley joined the Labour Party in 1978. She served as a Member of Coedpoeth Community Council, near Wrexham for eight years. In 2003, she stood as the Labour Candidate for Wrexham in the Welsh Assembly Elections.

On being elected as Wrexham’s AM, Lesley has served continuously on three of the Assembly’s main Standing Committees – the Communities and Culture Committee, the Sustainability Committee and the Audit Committee.

Lesley’s election to Cardiff Bay coincided with the advent of more powers being devolved to the Assembly. Since 2007, Lesley has worked on the Scrutiny Committees which have considered the drawing down of Legislative Competence on Vulnerable Children, Affordable Housing and more recently, the Welsh Language.

Lesley was the founding Member of the Assembly’s Cross Party Group on Hospices and Palliative Care.

In December, Lesley was appointed as Deputy Minister for Science, Innovation and Skills in the Welsh Assembly Government by the new Labour First Minister, Carwyn Jones.

Outside of the world of politics, Lesley’s love is Wrexham Football Club and prior to her election in 2007, she was an elected Board Member of the Wrexham Supporters Trust. Her other outside interests include walking and music.
