Labour victory in Risca West
Welsh Labour have retained the Risca West seat on Caerphilly County Council following a by-election held yesterday [Thursday 10 July]

The by-election was triggered following the death of Labour councillor Keith Griffiths. His wife, Phyl Griffiths, retained the seat for Labour with 636 votes, winning the seat with a 2:1 majority over Plaid.

Plaid Cymru polled 315 votes; Welsh Conservatives 137; Liberal Democrats 47.

Islwyn's Welsh Labour MP DON TOUHIG said:

"Just months into power, people have delivered their verdict on the Plaid administration running Caerphilly council.  They know Plaid have nothing to offer people in the Valleys and have once more backed Labour and our vision for strong, prosperous communities.

Islywn’s Welsh Labour Assembly Member IRENE JAMES said:

"I am delighted the people of Risca chose to elect a good local candidate who stood for improvements in public services, rejecting Plaids efforts to use Risca as a platform for their obsession with independence.

“Well done to Phyl Griffiths. I know she will make a fantastic councillor.”

Welsh Labour's newly elected Councillor in Risca West, PHYL GRIFFITHS said:

"Despite difficult times for the Labour party nationally, the residents of Risca and Pontymister have shown wonderful support and made sure of the election result, based on local issues and the excellent work of the previous Labour administration of Caerphilly County Borough Council.
