John Griffiths - Newport East
Born in Newport in 1956, John is a law graduate and has a diploma in psychology from the University of Wales, Cardiff. John worked as a lecturer in further and higher education before becoming a solicitor. A former Gwent County Councillor and Newport Borough Councillor, John is also a member of the Worker’s Educational Association, UNITE and the Co-Operative Party.
Currently the Welsh Assembly Government’s Counsel General and Leader of the Legislative Programme, John was first elected to the National Assembly for Wales in 1999 and has previously served as Deputy Minister for Skills, Deputy Minister for Health and Social Services and as Deputy Economic Development Minister. John’s political interests include economic development, social inclusion, education and Europe.
