Newport Labour – we’ll deliver over 5,000 jobs for local people

Velodrome bike - Liberal Democrats would leave the city in chaos: Carwyn Jones

NEWPORT Labour unveiled its plan to make Newport a world-class city today with the promise to create at least 5,000 jobs over the next four years.

Launching the plan at the city’s Velodrome, Labour Leader Bob Bright said that Labour had transformed Newport into a modern city with plenty of opportunities for young people and promised to deliver even more.

He was joined by Welsh Labour’s Counsel General Carwyn Jones, who endorsed the plan and warned of the danger posed to Newport by the Liberal Democrats.

Labour promises to deliver:
•    5,539 jobs for the city through inward investment, building on the 7,000 jobs created since 2003
•    Comprehensive regeneration of the city centre, building on the work already carried out, with £2bn of private and public money earmarked for the county
•    A package to get people into work, including more support for enterprise schemes within the community and cutting-edge training for the construction industry
•    Long-term benefits from the Ryder Cup in 2010, spreading the prosperity generated from the event to all citizens of Newport
•    Special measures to regenerate the Pill area of the city, through the improvement of the local environment and the targeting of regeneration funding
•    Maximum benefit from the Olympics, taking advantage of the prestigious Velodrome venue as a way of attracting more visitors to the city
•    Even better designed and more sustainable developments, improving Newport’s environment and attractiveness to visitors and residents

BOB BRIGHT said:

“Over the past four years Newport has changed dramatically, transformed into a modern city that offers quality jobs and real opportunities for local people. We are growing in confidence, and growing in stature.

“The story of Newport has been one of more and better jobs coming to the city. The story of the next four years will be even better. If the people of Newport re-elect Labour to run the council then I can promise them the creation of over 5,000 jobs.

“People know that we have the experience and the expertise as responsible guardians fo the city’s economy to deliver security and prosperity for Newport.”

CARWYN JONES said:

“I am really impressed with the vision and ambition Labour in Newport has for the city. We have a solid plan here that will deliver thousands of decent jobs to Newport.

“In my constituency of Bridgend we have a Liberal Democrat-led administration in charge of the council and I can say, first hand, that it has been an absolute disaster for the area. They have failed to deliver for local people and have been a complete shambles.

“I urge Newport people to look around their city, at the transformation that has occurred with a Labour council working in partnership with Labour in the Assembly and Labour in Westminster. Newport is a city of the future, a place with real prospects that can offer a stable future for young families.”
