Christine Chapman

Christine’s background is in the field of education. Prior to her being elected to the Welsh Assembly for the first time in 1999, Christine was a Councillor in Rhondda Cynon Taff County Borough Council representing the communities of Ynysybwl and Coed y Cwm.

Since 1999, Christine has served in a number of posts at the Assembly; Chairing the Objective One Programme Monitoring Committee and serving as Deputy Minister twice in portfolios including Education, the Economy, Local Government, Public Services and Finance and Culture. Christine has been Chair of the Petition’s Committee, a member of the Enterprise and Learning Committee and also sat on two Legislation Committees.

Since 2007, Christine has been the National Assembly for Wales’ representative at the Committee of the Regions in Brussels. She was also the Secretary of the Labour UNISON Group and Chair of the Assembly’s Cross Party Women in Democracy Group.

A strong advocate of lifelong learning, Christine is particularly interested in economic development, equal opportunities and community regeneration. She is also a supporter of the “Children Are Unbeatable Alliance” (CAU) Campaign. Other interests include women’s history.
