Assembly Members Aelodau'r Cynulliad
Carl Sargeant is Minister for Local Government and Communities.
Carl Sargeant was born in 1968 in St. Asaph, North Wales. He is married to Bernie and has two children, Lucy and Jack. He has lived in Connah’s Quay all his life and his parents, Malcolm & Sylvia, also live in the area.
Carl’s commitment to social justice comes from witnessing the devastation of his local community in the 1980’s when the steelmaking plant was closed at Shotton Steelworks. Over 8000 jobs were lost and the North-East Wales local economy was sent reeling. The misery was not helped by the closure of local textile mills and the early 1980’s recession. At one point there was over 30% local male unemployment.
Carl was first elected to represent the Alyn & Deeside Constituency in 2003 and was re-elected in 2007.
He served as a local Town Councillor and represented the Town of Connah’s Quay as its Chairman in 2001. Representing Golftyn Ward in Connah’s Quay, he was also Vice-Chairman of the Recreation and Entertainment Committee. He has also held Chairman responsibilities for Planning within the Town. Carl has been involved in many community projects and has served as a Governor of Deeside College and Ysgol Bryn Deva Primary School.
With football a family interest, Carl has many connections with Connah's Quay Tigers and enjoys watching many teams within the local leagues.
Previously employed by a leading manufacturing company in North Wales he has trained as a Quality & Environmental Auditor and also as an industrial fire-fighter.
In the Assembly, Carl has held several posts namely, Minister for Social Justice and Local Government, Chief Whip and Deputy Business Manager. He is a former Chair of the North Wales Regional Committee. In his first Assembly, he sat on the Enterprise, Innovation & Networks subject committee and was a member of the Railway, Infrastructure and Passenger Committee. He was also a member of the Assembly’s Audit Committee.
