A world-class promenade for a world-class city
LABOUR today promised to create a world-class promenade in Swansea to match its status as a world-class city.
And the party slammed the ruling Liberal Democrat-led administration for failing to provide any seating, shelters or toilets between county hall and Blackpill. It also said that a lack of proper lighting along the promenade posed a danger to the public. Labour group leader David Phillips, Swansea West AM Andrew Davies said that older people, families and tourists deserved better facilities and safety measures.
DAVID PHILLIPS said:
“Labour is proud that Swansea is becoming a world-class city, largely because of the investment of our governments in Westminster and the Assembly and the hard work of local people.
“Everyone loves a walk out on the beach in Swansea, from older people through to young families, and everyone deserves decent facilities. It is a basic requirement for a thriving seaside city.
“The plans to provide our city with a more European feel by developing a world-class boulevard have to be matched with plans to provide local people with a world-class promenade and currently there are no plans to do so.
“The fact there are no shelters, no seating, no toilets and terrible lighting in between county hall and Blackpill is a disgrace. It is unacceptable that our older people, who have worked hard all of their lives, have nowhere to shelter and nowhere to sit down when they stretch their legs and enjoy the fresh air.
“I don’t know of any other seaside city or town in Europe whose promenade is in such a poor state. That is why, if Labour wins the council election in May we will invest in the promenade and ensure that there are proper facilities to bring it up to the standard that people would expect of a thriving European city.”
ANDREW DAVIES said:
"The Labour Assembly Government has invested millions in the regeneration of Swansea , such as SA1, and the National Waterfront Mueum. I am proud to have been the Welsh Economic Development Minister when the majority of this investment took place.
"It is a shame that the same thought and care that we invested in the regeneration of our city has not been replicated by the Lib Dem-led council with our city's promenade. It is vital that Swansea has excellent facilities on the promenade to match its unique location so that local people can enjoy our fantastic coastline and we can draw in more visitors and provide even more of a boost to the local economy."
